About Navratri — Nine Nights of Divine Celebration
Navratri, meaning "nine nights" in Sanskrit, is one of the most sacred and vibrant Hindu festivals celebrated across India. Dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine divine forms (the Navadurga), Navratri is a nine-night festival filled with devotion, fasting, dance, and colour. It is celebrated four times a year, but the Sharad Navratri — falling in September or October just before Dussehra — is the most widely celebrated and festive of them all.
The nine nights of Navratri each honour a different form of the goddess: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. Each form represents a different aspect of divine feminine power — creation, preservation, strength, grace, and wisdom. The festival culminates on the tenth day, Vijayadashami (Dussehra), which marks the victory of good over evil.
When is Navratri Celebrated?
Sharad Navratri falls in the Hindu month of Ashwin (September-October), beginning on the first day (Pratipada) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month and lasting nine nights. The exact dates change each year with the lunar calendar. In 2025, Navratri begins on September 29 and concludes on October 7, with Dussehra on October 8. Other Navratri celebrations include Chaitra Navratri (spring), Gupta Navratri (summer), and Paush/Magha Navratri (winter).
How is Navratri Celebrated Across India?
Navratri is celebrated with tremendous regional diversity. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, it is synonymous with Garba and Dandiya Raas — traditional folk dances performed in large open grounds where thousands gather in colourful traditional attire (chaniya choli for women, kediyu for men) to dance in circles through the night. The energy, colour, and community spirit of Gujarati Garba is unmatched and has been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
In West Bengal, Navratri overlaps with Durga Puja — a five-day festival where elaborate clay idols of Goddess Durga are worshipped in beautifully decorated pandals (temporary structures) across cities, towns, and villages. The festival draws millions and is considered the cultural heartbeat of Bengal. In South India, Navratri is celebrated as Golu — dolls and figurines are arranged on steps (padi) and displayed in homes, with women visiting each other to admire the displays and exchange gifts and sweets.
Fasting is an important part of Navratri for many devotees. Special foods made without grains — such as sabudana khichdi, kuttu ki puri, singhare ke atte ka halwa, and fruits — are consumed during the fast. The colours worn each day of Navratri are also significant, with a specific colour associated with each of the nine forms of the goddess.
