About Eid — A Celebration of Faith, Gratitude & Community
Eid is one of the most important Islamic festivals celebrated by Muslims across India and the world. There are two major Eid celebrations: Eid ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan (a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection), and Eid ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid or the "Festival of Sacrifice," which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. Both are occasions of deep spiritual significance, communal joy, and generous giving.
Eid ul-Fitr — the "Festival of Breaking the Fast" — is a day of thanksgiving and celebration after 29 or 30 days of fasting from dawn to sunset during Ramadan. It is a time for Muslims to express gratitude for the strength and spiritual growth the month of Ramadan brings. Eid ul-Adha, celebrated approximately 70 days later, is considered the holier of the two Eids and coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
When is Eid Celebrated?
Eid follows the Islamic lunar calendar (Hijri calendar), which means the dates shift approximately 10–11 days earlier each year relative to the Gregorian calendar. Eid ul-Fitr begins on the first day of Shawwal (the month following Ramadan) and is declared upon the sighting of the new crescent moon. Eid ul-Adha falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. In India, the announcement of Eid typically comes from Islamic authorities and moon-sighting committees.
How is Eid Celebrated in India?
Eid begins with a special morning prayer called the Eid Namaz (Salat al-Eid), performed at mosques or large open prayer grounds (Eidgah) after sunrise. The entire community gathers — men, women, and children — dressed in their finest new clothes. The atmosphere is one of unity and brotherhood as worshippers exchange the greeting "Eid Mubarak" (Blessed Eid) with embraces and handshakes.
After prayers, families come together for lavish meals. The signature Eid dish across India is Sheer Khurma — a rich, creamy vermicelli pudding cooked with dates, milk, and dry fruits, symbolising the sweetness of the occasion. In many parts of India, sewai (vermicelli) is prepared in various forms and shared with neighbours of all faiths. Children receive Eidi — money or gifts given by elders — a tradition they eagerly look forward to.
Charity is central to Eid. Before Eid ul-Fitr prayers, Muslims pay Zakat ul-Fitr — a mandatory charitable contribution to ensure that even the less fortunate can partake in the celebrations. On Eid ul-Adha, an animal is sacrificed (Qurbani), and the meat is divided into three portions: one for family, one for friends and neighbours, and one for those in need. This act of sharing reflects the spirit of community and compassion that defines Eid.
