About Ganesh Chaturthi — The Birthday of Lord Ganesha
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi, is one of the most exuberant Hindu festivals in India, celebrated to honour the birth of Lord Ganesha — the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Ganesha is revered as the deity of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune, and the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta). Before beginning any new venture — whether a business, a journey, a marriage, or a creative endeavour — Hindus traditionally offer prayers to Lord Ganesha first, seeking his blessings for success and the removal of obstacles from their path.
The mythology of Ganesha's birth is told in several versions across Hindu scriptures. One of the most popular stories describes how Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste (or turmeric) and breathed life into him, setting him to guard her chambers while she bathed. Lord Shiva, not recognising Ganesha, attempted to enter and a confrontation ensued that resulted in Ganesha losing his head. To console the distraught Parvati, Shiva replaced Ganesha's head with that of an elephant — the first animal found lying with its head to the north — and restored him to life, proclaiming him the leader of his ganas (divine attendants) and the first deity to be worshipped in any ceremony.
When is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated?
Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, which typically corresponds to August or September in the Gregorian calendar. The festival lasts for 10 days, concluding on Anant Chaturdashi (the 14th day) with the immersion of Ganesha idols in water bodies — a ceremony known as Ganpati Visarjan or Ganapati Nimarjan. In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on August 27.
How is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated?
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with the greatest grandeur in Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai and Pune, where it is a major community festival with a history spanning over 125 years (popularised by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893 as a means of bringing communities together during the Independence movement). Thousands of pandals (temporary tent-like structures) are erected across cities, housing elaborate Ganesha idols — some of extraordinary size and artistic detail — that are worshipped by millions of devotees over the 10 days.
The festival begins with the installation of clay Ganesha idols in homes and public pandals. Daily rituals include morning and evening aarti (prayers with incense and lamps), the offering of modak (a steamed sweet dumpling filled with coconut and jaggery — Ganesha's favourite food), durva grass, hibiscus flowers, and coconut. Devotees fast, recite Ganesha mantras, listen to stories of his divine exploits, and participate in cultural programs.
The most spectacular part of the festival is Ganpati Visarjan — the procession on the final day when the idol is carried through the streets on a chariot or on the shoulders of devotees, accompanied by dhol-tasha bands, dancing, chanting of "Ganpati Bappa Morya! Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!" (O Lord Ganesha, come again soon next year!), and then immersed in the sea, river, or lake. It is a deeply moving moment that blends devotion, community spirit, and celebration.
