Sonora Smart Dodd proposed the holiday in 1910 after growing up watching her father, William Jackson Smart — a Civil War veteran widowed young — raise his children single-handedly. The first observance was local, in Spokane, Washington, that same year. It took over six decades to become a permanent US national holiday, only formalised by President Nixon in 1972, despite Mother's Day reaching that status decades earlier.

Father's Day 2026 falls on Sunday, 21 June.

"Pita Devo Bhava"

Indian tradition frames the father similarly to the mother — "Pita Devo Bhava" places him on the same reverential footing. But the expression tends to differ generationally: older Indian fathers are often remembered for demonstrating love through action rather than words — the extra shift worked, the new clothes skipped so a child's textbooks got bought, the quiet presence outside an exam hall. Younger fathers in India have shifted toward a more openly communicative style of parenting, though the underlying sense of responsibility carries over largely unchanged.

Less Loud Than Mother's Day, Not Less Felt

Father's Day gets measurably less public expression than Mother's Day across social media and marketing — fewer posts, fewer dedicated campaigns — despite the sentiment behind it running just as deep. In Indian households it tends to show up in quieter gestures: a family outing, a card, breakfast made rather than bought.
